ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
Lynnox Newton, Long Beach Poly, Senior
Long Beach Poly senior hurdler Lynnox Newton has been selected as the Press-Telegram boys track and field athlete of the year after winning the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet in a personal best time of 13.69 in the 110-meter hurdles at Moorpark High on Saturday, May 23. He also finished second in the 110-hurdles (13.74) at the CIF-SS Division 1 finals.
Newton was the top qualifier amongst 28 competitors in his signature event at the CIF State Championships at Buchanan High. He was the fourth-fastest in the prelims at the state meet (13.74) and won his qualifying heat but was disqualified in the final for a hurdle violation.
Newton finished fourth in the 110 hurdles at the state meet as a junior in 13.82.
The Utah Tech signee won Moore League titles in the 110-hurdles (14.34) and 300-meter hurdles (38.34 personal best). He finished his high school career as the second-fastest hurdler in program history.

Crystal Irving, Long Beach Poly
Crystal Irving led Long Beach Poly to a third-place finish at the CIF Southern Section Division 1 finals. The Jackrabbits won the Moore League team title. They also had an area-high 14 Dream Team selections, including the area’s best 4×100 and 4×400 relays, hurdlers and long jumpers.
