BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A 36-year-old man was arrested for suspicion of DUI after crashing into a KCSO transport vehicle, injuring the driver and three inmates, on 24th Street early Thursday morning.
The Bakersfield Police Department said on June 11, 2026, at around 2:55 a.m., officers were called to the intersection of Chester Avenue and 24th Street regarding a crash.
Officers arrived and found 36-year-old Bernice Bravo Menzo, the driver of a black sedan, who sustained minor to moderate injuries, and determined to be driving under the influence.
Menzo was taken to a hospital for treatment and arrested for felony DUI.
CHP said the preliminary investigation found that Bravo was driving westbound on 24th Street at excessive speed and allegedly ran the red light, hitting a KCSO transport vehicle that was traveling southbound on Chester Avenue approaching the intersection of 24th Street on a green light.
The driver of the KCSO transport van and three inmates sustained minor to moderate injuries. All were taken by ambulance to the hospital for treatment.
24th Street at Chester Avenue is a one-way westbound roadway with three lanes of traffic. Chester Avenue at 24th Street is a north-south roadway with two lanes of traffic in each direction, with a left-turn storage lane for northbound traffic. The intersection is controlled by three-way automated traffic signals that BPD said appear to be working properly at the time of the collision.
