OAKLAND CITY, Ind. (WFIE) – Renters across the city could be out of a home as Oakland City University potentially puts dozens of properties up for sale.
Some organizations, like East Gibson School Corporation, say the properties selling could be a benefit.
OCU is tax exempt for nearly 70 properties city-wide. The university is not currently paying taxes that go toward things like school operations, which fund buses and maintenance.
The East Gibson superintendent says new owners coming in, buying the properties and paying taxes would be good news for the schools.
“It could definitely be a benefit to us. Because as those come back on, it’s definitely going to be more money for us, as well as the civic organizations here in town. Those are your library, your city, those kinds of places. It’s definitely going to benefit them,” said Superintendent Michael Galvin.
The superintendent says he is sad to see the university close its doors and is worried about the strain it will put on local restaurants and shops. However, he says the community is ready to welcome new faces.
