A heat advisory is in effect for Macomb, Oakland and several other southeast Michigan counties until 8 p.m. today as heat index values are expected to reach 100 degrees.
That’s the word from the National Weather Service Detroit/Pontiac bureau, which issued the heat warning at noon today.
“Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses,” meteorologists said in their advisory.
The weather service said there also is the potential for an organized line of thunderstorms to track across the region between 8 p.m. today and 3 a.m. Friday.
Storms could bring damaging winds in excess of 70 mph, “spin-up” tornadoes, and large hail if the line holds together.
Look for the heat wave to diminish slightly on Friday, with temperatures reaching a high of 84. But the scorching weather returns Saturday, with a high of 90.
A cold front arrives Saturday night, bringing a potential for more thunderstorms, before highs dip into the 70s for early next week.
Tips for dealing with the extreme heat include:
Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, limit time outdoors, and check up on relatives and neighbors
Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes
Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
