BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Bakersfield Police Department announced a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint for Friday night.

The checkpoint will be at an undisclosed location in Bakersfield from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. June 12, according to police.

Officers will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment, as well as proper licensing. Drivers will be delayed momentarily, according to BPD.

Specially trained officers may also be there to evaluate those suspected of drug-impaired driving, which includes prescription drugs, marijuana and some over-the counter medications on top of illegal narcotics.

Officials use collision statistics and DUI arrest numbers to determine where to place DUI checkpoints, according to police.

Drivers arrested while driving impaired can face jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes and other expenses that could exceed $10,000, officials said.

DUI checkpoints are proven to help reduce the number of deaths and injuries in crashes involving alcohol or drugs, according to police. Crashes involving an impaired driver can reportedly be reduced by 20% if police conduct DUI checkpoints and patrols routinely and the public is made aware.

The checkpoint is funded with a grant the police department received through the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

BPD encouraged the public to call 911 if they see a suspected impaired driver.
