Four men pistol-whipped and robbed an Uber driver early Friday morning while he was waiting to pick up a passenger outside an Oakland hotel, the Oakland Police Department said.
The driver arrived outside the Oakland Marriott City Center at around 4 a.m. Friday morning, according to a police report. Two cars — a white Lexus and a gray Dodge Charger — then pulled up alongside him.
Surveillance footage reviewed by the Chronicle shows four masked people in dark clothing getting out of the cars and surrounding the victim’s vehicle.
The four suspects can be seen opening the passenger- and driver-side doors of the car and threatening the man inside with pistols.
They struck the driver on the head with their guns about 10 times, according to the police report, before fleeing southbound on Broadway with his wallet and cell phone.
The driver suffered “moderate lacerations and swelling to face and head,” according to the report. When police arrived, he declined medical treatment and said he would take himself to a local hospital.
Police recovered the Lexus from 1700 Castro Street, the address of a gas station about a mile from the hotel. Police found the Dodge’s license plate inside the Lexus, and a witness told officers that the four suspects had piled into the Dodge before driving away eastbound on Interstate 580.
No arrests had been announced by Friday evening.
