The New York Giants were dismantled by the San Francisco 49ers, 34-24, at MetLife Stadium in Week 9. The game wasn’t nearly as close as the score indicates, with rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart grinding out two garbage-time touchdowns late.
The loss, which began with another pre-kickoff plane protest, drops the Giants to 2-7 for the third consecutive season. It was also the third straight game in which Shane Bowen’s defense surrendered 30-plus points. And while the Giants are undeniably banged up, that excuse is rendered invalid given that San Francisco is dealing with similar (if not worse) issues.
Things only get tougher from here as the Giants travel to the Windy City to take on the Chicago Bears in Week 10 before back-to-back games with the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions.
Here’s a look at whose stock is up and whose is down after Week 9 of the regular season.
Stock up: QB Jaxson Dart
The Giants appear to have found their franchise quarterback in rookie Jaxson Dart, and that was on display during Sunday’s loss. It’s not that Dart put up some record-breaking numbers; it’s that he never quit in a game where many of his teammates appeared to. He put his body on the line until the very last whistle, giving every play 100 percent in a desperate attempt to create a miracle. There’s something to like about Dart, who seems determined to change the entire franchise — even if he has to do it himself.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, it’s time for co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch to pull the plug on the Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll regime. They demanded improvement this year, and through nine games, the Giants are 2-7 for the third consecutive season. It’s a square peg and a round hole. It’s simply not working at this point, and the blame should be spread equally between the front office and the coaching staff. Both are bad, and scapegoating one or the other isn’t going to serve as a long-term solution for the Giants.
Stock up: LB Brian Burns
Brian Burns deserves Defensive Player of the Year consideration, but isn’t likely to get it because of the Giants’ struggles. However, like Dart on offense, Burns is one player you can point to and assert he’s giving his all on every single play. Such was the case on Sunday as he recorded four tackles (one for a loss), one QB hit, one sack, one forced fumble, and one pass defensed. He now stands alone atop the league with 11.0 sacks.
Stock down: NT Dexter Lawrence
If there were ever a time for Dexter Lawrence to regain his dominant form, Sunday would have been it. He faced heavy criticism all week from the likes of Giants legend Carl Banks, analysts, and fans. It got to the point where his position coach, Andre Patterson, stepped in and made a case for Lawrence. Then came Sunday, and Lawrence recorded only a single tackle as the 49ers rushed for 159 yards, with running backs Christian McCaffrey and Brian Robinson Jr. averaging 4.82 yards per carry.
Stock up: RB Devin Singletary
There weren’t many things to write home about in Week 9, but veteran running back Devin Singletary deserves some recognition. The team’s starting back just a season ago, “Motor” quickly found himself to be an afterthought following the emergence of Tyrone Tracy Jr. and then Cam Skattebo. Thrust into more action on Sunday due to injuries, Singletary gained 43 yards on the ground while averaging 5.4 yards per carry, and caught both of his targets. It wasn’t much, but coupled with some decent blocking, Singletary stepped up and did his part when precious few others did.
Stock down: CB Deonte Banks
There’s no need to write up something extravagant on Deonte Banks. Just take a look at his effort:
This pathetic display came not long after Banks appeared to avoid a scrum while a 49ers ball-carried barreled forward. He didn’t engage in the play until forward momentum had already stopped.
In the locker room after the game, Banks skirted reporters, waddling by them toward the showers with his pants around his ankles (no, seriously).
