The Edmonton Oilers continue to explore trade options for veteran defenseman Darnell Nurse, and a surprising Western Conference team could emerge as a possible destination.
Nurse, who carries a $9.25 million cap hit through the 2029-30 NHL season as part of his $74 million contract, reportedly requested a trade earlier this offseason. While most speculation has focused on Eastern Conference teams, the San Jose Sharks may be a dark-horse candidate if they aggressively pursue blue-line help.
The Sharks have made no secret of their need for defensive upgrades. Speaking on Sports1440, Sharks analyst Sheng Peng suggested San Jose could use its surplus of young forwards to acquire an established defenseman.
“The Sharks desperately need to improve their defense,” Peng said. “And they will look to do it in free agency and via trade. If the Sharks draft Stenberg, then they could move a young forward like Eklund to acquire a proven D-man.”

Peng also floated the possibility of moving a young forward such as William Eklund if San Jose adds another top offensive prospect through the 2026 NHL Draft, a forward like Ivar Stenberg.
That scenario naturally raises questions about whether the Sharks could target a proven NHL blueliner like Nurse.

Why Oilers D-man Darnell Nurse could make sense for San Jose?

Nurse remains a more valuable player than his critics often acknowledge.
NHL analyst Jason Gregor recently highlighted several strengths that continue to make the 31-year-old attractive around the league.
“Always available. Has only missed 18 games the past nine seasons. Can log big minutes. Skates well. Is physical,” Gregor wrote on X.
Gregor also noted that Nurse “can chip in offensively at 5×5. He is 40th in EV goals and points among Dmen the past three seasons”, saying, “He’s not a #1 Dman, but he has value.”
The challenge is balancing that value against the contract. Nurse is no longer viewed as a true No. 1 defenseman, but he remains a legitimate top-four option who can handle difficult assignments.

For San Jose, acquiring Nurse would immediately strengthen a defense corps that lacks experience and stability. His skating, durability, and leadership could help insulate a young roster built around emerging talent like Macklin Celebrini.
For Edmonton, the priority remains cap flexibility. Elliotte Friedman recently reported that there is legitimate interest around the league and that the Oilers could complete a genuine “hockey trade” rather than a salary dump.
Whether San Jose becomes involved remains uncertain, but the fit is logical. The Sharks need proven defense, and the Oilers need financial flexibility. Those needs could eventually align.
