The midweek hootenanny known as Wine & Song lands at The Hive in South Pasadena on Wednesday, June 17, with a double bill of singer-songwriters who write from the heart and play with serious craft. Hosted by Brad Colerick, the long-running series sets up in living rooms, courtyards and small venues around town for an evening of original music in close quarters. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the music begins at 7.
Jessica Gerhardt opens a window onto a sound that moves from intimate, ukulele-driven folk to anthemic indie rock. A Los Angeles native who grew up in a mixed-faith family, Gerhardt writes in the tradition of fierce femme rock with a distinct spiritual bent, a quality that runs through her newly released album, “Alight Beyond the Sea.” A sponsored Lanikai Ukuleles artist, she co-founded the arts collective Parnassus and Co. and hosts the Friday at The Fox Den concert series.
Christina Apostolopoulos brings soulful vocals and slide-guitar mastery to a songwriting style that glides between folk, rock and jazz. Born in Toronto and raised on the shores of Santa Barbara, she came up on the music of troubadours like Paul Simon and Jackson Browne, and she graduated magna cum laude from Berklee College of Music with a degree in guitar performance.
Light snacks and beverages will be available by donation, in keeping with the series’ easygoing, community-minded spirit.
Wine & Song featuring Jessica Gerhardt and Christina Apostolopoulos will run on Wednesday, June 17 at The Hive, 1118 Mission St., South Pasadena.
