Matt Waldron continues to handle the Pacific Coast League just fine.
The right-hander began a rehab assignment with 2⅓ scoreless innings in Triple-A El Paso’s 5-4 loss at Round Rock on Sunday.
Waldron allowed one hit and threw 19 of his 27 pitches for strikes as he begins a ramp-up after a brachialis injury sent him to the injured list for the second time this season.
Waldron opened the year on the injured list after an unexpected surgery set him back in spring training. He threw 12 scoreless innings on that rehab assignment until replacing the injured Nick Pivetta in the big-league rotation. Waldron had an 8.49 ERA in 23⅓ innings in the majors, including twice working behind an opener and once in mop-up duty in relief before landing on the injured list on May 15.
Left-hander Marco Gonzales (7.99 ERA) allowed three runs—one earned—in four innings in bulk relief.
Shortstop Clay Dungan (.757 OPS) drove in two runs on two hits, including a double.
El Paso is 31-38.
