BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Votes were still being counted from the June 2 primary election, but updated results released today showed growing support for Measure A, a countywide proposal that would establish Kern County as a charter county.

The Kern County Elections Office said the latest results showed Measure A with 63% support, despite public opposition to the proposal leading up to the election.

The Kern County Board of Supervisors has said the change would give the county more control over how vacancies on the board are filled. Under Kern’s current status as a general law county, the governor appoints a replacement when a board seat becomes vacant. Measure A would instead allow the board to either appoint a replacement or call a special election so voters can choose one.
