Homicide detectives on Monday arrested a 22-year-old man suspected of fatally stabbing another man in the early morning near the downtown San Diego Central Courthouse, according to police.
The stabbing was reported around 12:45 a.m. on West C Street between Union and Front streets, according to San Diego police acting homicide Lt. Joel Tien. Officers arrived to find the victim unresponsive and suffering from at least one stab wound.
The victim, described as a man in his 30s or 40s, was taken to a hospital, where he later died, Tien said. As of late Monday morning, police were working with the county Medical Examiner’s Office to identify the victim.
Tien said at least one nearby surveillance camera captured the attack — the area, which is near both the courthouse and several detention facilities, is heavily surveilled. The suspect was last seen heading east on C Street at Front Street.
A little after 8 a.m., security officers from the Metropolitan Transit District contacted San Diego police and reported that they’d made contact with a man matching the suspect’s description at the trolley station at 12th and Imperial avenues, a major hub for all three lines of the trolley, about 1.5 miles from where the attack occurred.
San Diego police arrested that man, Conrad Waldron, on suspicion of murder, Tien said.
The area where the fatal attack occurred is near both Orange and Blue Line trolley tracks, and Tien said trolley service was temporarily restricted early in the morning but has since resumed. Officers continued blocking vehicle traffic in the area later Monday morning but opened pedestrian access to the courthouse, Tien said.
Homicide detectives were expected to be in the area throughout the day Monday searching for evidence and reviewing surveillance footage, according to Tien.
