FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — The Fresno Board of Supervisors approved a resolution on Tuesday to designate June as “Traditional Nuclear Family Month” in Fresno County.
Several Republican-led cities and states around the country have adopted similar resolutions, but Fresno County is the first county in California to pass one.
The resolution passed 3-2, with Supervisors Brian Pacheco and Luis Chavez voting against.
Critics of the resolution say it excludes LGBTQ+ families, but Supervisor Garry Bredefeld, who sponsored it, says it doesn’t prevent anyone from celebrating Pride Month, which also takes place in June.
Bredefeld said the resolution is intended to celebrate families built around what he calls traditional values, not to oppose any particular group.
“It doesn’t go against them. It stands for something. It doesn’t stand against anything,” Bredefeld said. “It stands for traditional values. It stands for the things that this country was founded on, our Judeo-Christian beliefs.”
According to Bredefeld, the idea was inspired by similar resolutions adopted in states including Texas and Tennessee.
