Gwyneth Paltrow’s ghost kitchen Goop Kitchen made its Bay Area debut last year with locations in San Francisco and the South Bay. Last week, the health-centric takeout restaurant expanded to the East Bay, announcing its arrival in a LinkedIn post reading: “Good, clean food. Across the bridge. Berkeley is now open.”
There’s just one hitch with the new Berkeley Goop Kitchen: It’s in Oakland (as first spotted by the San Francisco Business Times). The delivery-only spot is at 5333 Adeline St., which, despite being less than a mile from the Berkeley border, is firmly in Oakland. It raises the question: Did Paltrow’s business distance itself from Oakland because it clashes with its aesthetic? Maybe “Berkeley” just sounds more palatable to the type of consumer inclined to buy a $75 vagina-scented candle.
To be fair, the new ghost kitchen does also deliver to Berkeley, as well as Emeryville and other East Bay cities. The new Goop Kitchen is housed in the Adeline Food Hall, which houses over 30 different restaurants under one roof for pickup and delivery only.
Goop Kitchen did not respond to SFGATE’s inquiry regarding the East Bay location’s geographic identity crisis in time for publication. However, “The menu mirrors the other goop locations, offering salads, pizzas, wraps, summer rolls, and more, which are all free from gluten, refined sugar, additives, and seed oils,” a Goop Kitchen media representative told SFGATE.
The restaurant’s offerings include a blackened salmon bowl, a teriyaki chicken bowl, a Chinese chicken salad and gluten-free pepperoni pizza.
“While a slop bowl can only be so good, Goop Kitchen’s food exceeded my expectations,” I wrote when I reviewed Goop Kitchen last December, despite some misgivings about the “clean” food branding. “I’d take it over Sweetgreen or Mixt any day.”
After debuting in Los Angeles in 2021, Goop Kitchen arrived in the Bay Area beginning in October 2025 with a San Jose location. Two more ghost kitchens, in Sunnyyale and San Francisco, followed in November and December, respectively. Now, the chain also plans to open one of its first dine-in locations in San Francisco at 405 Howard Street in the Financial District, according to the San Francisco Chronicle (the Chronicle and SFGATE are both owned by Hearst but have separate newsrooms). An opening date for the restaurant has yet to be announced.
