Sacramento County supervisors approve Upper Westside housing project amid divided opinions

The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to advance the Upper Westside housing project, a proposal that has drawn both support and opposition from the community and local officials. The meeting revealed a divided room, with one side in favor of the project. “Wish you would vote yes on the project so that the properties on the low density in this plan here can then come in alignment with the new zoning,” one attendee said.The other side opposed the development, including former Sacramento Mayor Heather Fargo. “We really feel that we do not have a fair process here and you should either vote no or delay the project,” Fargo said. Supervisor Phil Serna, whose district includes the proposed development site, acknowledged the division in the room. “There’s probably some disagreement on what this side of the room thinks is right versus what this side of the room,” Serna said. The city of Sacramento has also expressed opposition to the project. In August, the City Council voted 8-1 to send a letter to the Board of Supervisors urging them to reject the proposal. Despite the opposition, the board voted 5-0 to approve the project with amendments. Serna highlighted the project’s alignment with the county’s general plan. “The fact that this project scores 24 out of 24 points.
