Alysa Liu is finally cashing in one of her sweetest post-Olympics prizes.
Shortly after the 20-year-old Bay Area athlete became the first American woman to score an Olympic gold medal for individual figure skating since 2002 earlier this year, Fentons Creamery in Oakland declared that Liu could have free ice cream for life. The historic East Bay ice cream parlor even named a flavor after her.
This week, Liu stopped by Fentons Creamery in Oakland to take them up on their offer.
“Alysa came in for takeout tonight, keeping things low-key with a baseball cap, but was kind enough to snap a photo with Luis,” according to a Facebook post from Fentons Creamery on Monday, June 15, featuring a photo of the gold medalist holding up a branded freezer bag while posing with an employee. “Best of all, she loved her flavor!”
The flavor, called Alysa’s Gold, consists of caramel ice cream with golden Oreo chunks and a caramel swirl, reminiscent of the iconic blonde streaks in her hair.
Liu, who trains at the Oakland Ice Center, has risen to local and global fame after her Olympic victory earlier this year. Since returning from Milan, she has become an official Louis Vuitton ambassador, was invited to introduce Taylor Swift at the iHeartRadio Music Awards, starred in a Laufey music video and made her Met Gala debut in May, posing for photos with Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Dr. Priscilla Chan inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
