The fear of gun violence at schools is something that no doubt keeps parents up at night and has fueled national conversations. Its important to keep track of shootings that happen both on school campuses and near them. Just because a shooting happens off campus, doesn’t mean students aren’t at risk. In 2025 there were more than 1,000 shootings that took place within 500 yards of a school in California, according to a Get the Facts Data Team analysis of data provided by the Gun Violence Data Hub. See those locations in the map below. A recent shooting took place after a graduation ceremony in the parking lot of Fairfield High School’s Schaefer Stadium. The shooting killed 18-year-old Jamario Baker, a Sem Yeto High School student who graduated moments before. Three other people ages 11, 20 and 25 were injured in the shooting. The June 3 graduation shooting opened the door for conversation about the environment students in the area are in, with several people expressing to KCRA 3 that they feel unsafe and wish more was being done in response to gun violence at Fairfield High School and in the area. Luis and Amanda Prieto, a couple who live next to Fairfield High School, told KCRA 3 about the moments they first heard shots fired after the graduation and questioned the safety of the area for their child. “I was immediately terrified, this was the third shooting I’ve witnessed at this school in the last three years,” Amanda Prieto said. “I was just immediately terrified. These kids can’t even graduate.”Amanda Prieto added that their 17-year-old son attends Fairfield High.”My husband was like ‘Do we need to pull him out of this school?'” she said. “Because there was another shooting at the beginning of the school year as school was letting out and he witnessed as he was walking through the parking lot and it’s terrifying.”A girl named Alyssa told KCRA 3’s Esteban Reynoso that shootings are a repeat occurrence in the area. She said she used to attend school in Fairfield.”People keep getting shot at this school and it’s not getting fixed, nothing happening,” she said. “It’s sad. It’s really sad.”The map below, curated from our Get the Facts Data Team, shows where shootings happened on school campuses in 2025. While the recent graduation shooting is not included because it happened after the data was compiled, a shooting at Fairfield High School in September 2025 is included.
