Stale, worn-out thinking has zero traction in the world of vibrant, electrifying, super-dynamic art, including the tired trope that art is somehow static, unmovable, and locked in time.

There’s a flow, a fabulousness, and a fantasy-driven spirit to the creative life, and those who embrace imagination. This expressive spirit will be on dazzling display June 20 when The Art Parade merrily frolics down Wilshire Boulevard and around the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, specifically its newest, twenty-years-in-the-making building.

That would be the David Geffen Galleries, the striking and sinuous structure that debuted in April. Now the time has come to festively fête this fresh realm of centuries-spanning art by throwing a huge, panache-packed procession.

On June 20, starting at 6 p.m., dozens of artistic groups, music collectives, solo artists, and people seeking to connect with community in a joyful and authentic way will take part in The Art Parade, a spunky happening which first sprung up in SoHo, in New York City, over two decades ago.

Jeffrey Deitch, the art curator and collector, dreamt up the come-one-come-all festivity, an in-the-streets revelry that regularly drew “1,000 participants a year.”

Join the Grand Opening Weekend for LACMA’s David Geffen Galleries; the creative fun is in bloom from June 18-22, with The Art Parade rolling on June 20 at 6 o’clock.

Now Los Angeles will get its own large-scale lark outside the Miracle Mile museum, with a bevy of enthusiastic participants adding to the rollicking scene.

“(T)he parade showcases mobile sculptures, costumes, banners, inflatables, music, and movement-based works that activate public space through collective artistic expression,” is the promising promise.

Some of the attendees on the lengthy list? Wearable Puppets, Meow Wolf, Paper Bag Personas, and A Sky of Stitches — Knitted and Crocheted Umbrellas, as well as several other spritely and strange groups, dream producers, and surreal specialists.

This spirited centerpiece of the Grand Opening Weekend, the June 18-22 party LACMA is presenting in honor of the David Geffen Galleries, is free to see.

There’s also a LACMA Block Party on June 20 — museum admission is free, wheeee — a solstice-inspired dance on June 21, art-making moments, serene sound baths, and more uplifting offerings on the multi-day schedule.
