Coronado residents, workers and visitors are being urged to plan ahead as NASCAR San Diego arrives at Naval Base Coronado for the first-ever race on an active military base.

About 50,000 people are expected on the small 13.5 square-mile peninsula each day during the three-day event taking place on the Qualcomm Circuit.

While all races will be held at Naval Base Coronado, the impact is expected to extend well beyond the installation as large crowds travel to and from the area.

Coronado already sees significant daily traffic from residents, employees and tourists, particularly during the busy summer season. With the NASCAR event nearing a sellout, organizers and officials expect traffic throughout the area to be especially heavy all weekend.

Anyone traveling to the race or visiting Coronado during the weekend is encouraged to allow extra travel time and prepare for delays.

Gary Taylor, who will be performing with his band at Mc P’s Irish Pub on Orange Avenue during the race weekend, said he is expecting the area to be especially busy.

“It’s gonna be crazy. But I’m looking forward to it. I live in Ocean Beach which is a little north of here so it takes a little while. But it’ll be all right, I think,” Taylor said.

Because the event is being held on a Navy base, security measures will be strict. Attendees must have a valid event ticket and a government-issued photo ID to enter.

Event organizers also recommend attendees download their tickets to their phones before arriving.

Transportation
Several transportation options are available for racegoers. A designated rideshare drop-off location will be available outside the base. Visitors can also take the ferry, though there is no shuttle service between the ferry landing and Naval Base Coronado. Bicycles are also permitted.

Parking
Parking is included with a NASCAR San Diego event ticket.
