Overnight lane closures of the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro are planned for Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 5 and 6.

The closures will take place from 7 p.m. on the dates listed to 6 a.m. on the following days.

Beginning at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, a full southbound closure on the bride — between Ferry Street and Harbor Boulevard — is planned with the bridge reopening at 6 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 6.  Traffic will be diverted from the bridge’s southbound lanes to westbound State Route 1/Pacific Coast Highway.

On Thursday, a northbound lane will close between Harbor Boulevard and Ferry Street, with one lane remaining open for motorists. The closure will be lifted at 6 a.m. Friday, Nov. 7.

The work involves repairing finger joints on the bridge roadway. The bridge expansion joints allow a bridge to expand and contract. The interlocking steel plates, resembling fingers, slide over each other, allowing for movement and maintaining the driving surface.

Due to weather or operational reasons, dates are subject to change.

The California Department of Transportation, or Caltrans, will replace the existing roadway on the 1963 bridge with a new road deck beginning in the fall of 2026. That work, which is scheduled to last until winter 2027-28, will completely shut down the bridge to traffic.
