Authorities have identified a passenger who was killed last month in a two-vehicle crash on Lakeville Highway that also hospitalized both drivers.
Carolina Guzman Sierra, 46, of Vallejo, was riding in a northbound Honda HR-V around 6 a.m. Oct. 26 when the collision occurred near Old Lakeville Road No. 3, south of Petaluma.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the driver of a southbound Ford Mustang was attempting to pass a Toyota Highlander by crossing the double yellow lines when the Ford crashed head-on into the Honda. The Toyota was struck on the left side, causing it to spin off the road.
Guzman was pronounced dead at the scene. The Sonoma County Coroner’s Office later confirmed her identity.
All six occupants of the Toyota were uninjured.
The Honda’s driver sustained major injuries and was taken to Providence Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. CHP is not aware of their current condition, which is typical unless injuries become fatal, Officer David deRutte said.
The Ford’s driver, Jesus Garcia, 24, of Vallejo, also suffered major injuries and was hospitalized. Officers observed signs that Garcia was intoxicated and arrested him on suspicion of felony DUI involving alcohol and drugs and vehicular manslaughter.
As of Monday, Garcia remained hospitalized. Once released, he will be booked into the Sonoma County jail.
CHP investigators determined contributing factors included DUI, an illegal passing maneuver and unsafe speed, deRutte said.
