The City’s Department of Facility Maintenance is scheduled to start an improvement project on Wahiawa’s California Avenue on Monday, June 22.
Depending on the weather, work to improve road conditions will occur on the busy thoroughfare between Kamehameha Highway and Puninoni Street in Wahiawa Heights from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday (except state holidays) and will require partial lane closures. Weather permitting, they will complete the project in February 2027.
DFM’s Information Specialist, Chassity-Ann Santiago, told Spectrum News in an email that the plan calls for construction to start near Kamehameha Highway and progress up toward the heights; however, this could change as the project moves forward.
Officials encourage motorists and pedestrians to avoid the work area and use alternate routes when possible. Allow extra travel time and follow posted traffic control signs and directions. DFM states that construction will temporarily restrict access to some driveways, but they will make efforts to minimize disruptions.
Emergency vehicles will have access.
When asked about repairs to the sidewalk along California Avenue above Leilehua High School, which has become increasingly pockmarked and hazardous to pedestrians who don’t watch where they walk, Santiago said there are no plans to repair the sidewalk as part of the upcoming project.
“However, our Road Division does sidewalk repairs on an as-needed basis,” responded Santiago. “If members of the public identify sidewalk areas in need of repair, we encourage them to take a photo and submit a service request through HNL311.” She addedthe city can only repair sidewalks that fall within its jurisdiction.
