GARDEN CITY, Utah — A 17-year-old girl from California died Friday afternoon after the off-highway vehicle she was riding in overturned while performing stunts in a Garden City parking lot.
The fatal crash occurred at approximately 4:15 p.m. at Heritage Park, according to a press release from the Utah Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division. Authorities reported that four teenagers, all visiting from California, were inside the OHV doing “donuts” in the park’s parking lot when the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to roll over.
The 17-year-old victim was seated in the back of the OHV and was forcefully ejected upon impact. Investigating officers noted that she was not wearing a seatbelt or a helmet at the time of the crash.
Emergency medical personnel quickly arrived at the scene and initiated life-saving efforts. Despite the immediate medical intervention, the teenager succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s name, pending notification of family.
The Utah Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. Officials expressed their gratitude to the multiple regional agencies that assisted with the emergency response, including Intermountain Health LifeFlight, the Rich County Sheriff’s Office, Rich County EMS, and the Garden City Fire District.
“The Utah Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division offers its sympathies and condolences to family and friends during this difficult time,” the agency stated.
In light of the tragic incident, state officials issued a safety reminder for anyone operating or riding in off-highway vehicles. The department strongly encourages all riders to always wear Department of Transportation-approved helmets, ensure they fully understand their vehicle’s capabilities, and thoroughly research trail systems before riding.
