DEL NORTE, Calif. — The Office of Spill Prevention and Response (OSPR) are continuing cleanup along the Smith River east of Crescent City after an overturned truck carrying asphalt binder impacted the waterway.
The crash occurred June 11, 2026, on Highway 199, near Mile Post 27, and involved only the tanker truck. One-way traffic control was put in place on U.S. 199 near Idlewild while emergency crews worked in the area.
OSPR says cleanup is ongoing and crews have collected 3,778 pounds of material so far.
Terrain is extremely steep in the impacted area and crews are using slides to recover the spilled product.
At the time, no product has been observed in the river one mile downstream of the incident.
