Thirty-five-year-old Dani Korkis faced a judge in an El Cajon court room at his arraignment for a felony hit and run accident that sent a 12-year-old boy to the hospital.

During the hearing on Monday, prosecutors revealed that Korkis already had two open felony evading police cases, as well as a reckless driving charge. Those incidents all took place prior to the hit-and-run on Oct. 22 on Ballantyne Avenue, in El Cajon.

A 12 year old is in the hospital after they were hit by a car while riding their bike in El Cajon. Police are now searching for the driver who took off following the crash.

Korkis allegedly evaded police in both July and August of this past summer, according to prosecutors, then, according to court documents, failed to appear in court for one of those earlier charges.

Prosecutor Natalie Scholfield told the court on Monday how Korkis’ BMW left debris at the scene on Ballantyne Avenue, and also mentioned how his family members heard about the accident on the news, noticed blood on the car, and even encouraged him to turn himself in.

Scholfield also detailed how detectives discovered surveillance video from his Korkoris’ smoke shop, in which he can be heard admitting to the accident.

Still, however, he didn’t turn himself into. Eventually, though, police caught up with him.

Judge Peter A. Lynch commented on Korkoris’ decision to repeat dangerous behavior.

“All of which would have been avoided if he had followed the traffic laws that everybody else is supposed to, but he doesn’t do that,” Lynch said. “He consciously chooses to behave in this repetitive conduct, which has ended up with a tragedy related to the injury.”

Also on Monday, Scholfield provided an update on the victim’s condition.

“He’s had surgery on his leg and his arm to help reconstruct things, he lost multiple teeth, and the remainder of those teeth are being held up by a wire,” Scholfield said. “He was in a coma initially, but he seems to be heading in the right direction, thankfully, but, obviously, he has a long road ahead of him.”

Lynch set bail for all three charges at $1.5 millon. He’s due back in court on Nov. 17.
