The Original Farmers Market is packed with cherished and bustling legacy businesses, including a shop that is celebrating four flavorful decades at the Third & Fairfax landmark.
It’s Huntington Meats, a savory spot that has been helping customers choose the best brisket, slices of bacon, and premium steaks since 1986, as well as the all-important spices and rubs that help make a meal so memorable.
But the counter’s memorable efforts extend beyond what is seen in the display cases: Jim Cascone, who has been at the helm of Huntington Meats since 2000, is spending the last few summers giving back to schoolkids in need of supplies
A school supplies donation drive is now open at Huntington Meats, and at the shop’s sister counter, Farmers Market Poultry, through July 31.
How it all works?
Stop by either spot, donate school supplies — they should be brand-new and not yet used —that are worth ten dollars or more, and leave with something tasty for dinner: Either a pound of ground beef or sausages at Huntington Meats or a pound of ground turkey or ground chicken from Farmers Market Poultry.
Note that the supplies you donate should be worth at least $10 or more to participate in this giveaway.
The donation drive is open through July 31, with the goal of gathering supplies for 350 local kids. The backpacks, pencil pouches, rulers, and lunch boxes, along with everything else that is donated, will be distributed through the Union Rescue Mission, located in Downtown Los Angeles.
“Having worked with Union Rescue Mission previously with other projects, we feel this was another way for Huntington Meats and Farmers Market Poultry to give back to the kids, this time providing them with some of the tools they need to excel in school this year,” said Mr. Cascone.
“We forget that some kids may never have started school with brand new school supplies, which was something many of us took for granted growing up.”
