FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — A hazardous materials response at a Fresno apartment complex prompted evacuations and a major street closure Thursday morning after residents reported getting sick and investigators considered the possibility of fentanyl exposure.
Fresno Fire Department crews responded at about 10:30 a.m. to the Renaissance at Alta Monte, a multifamily complex, after reports that people were coughing and throwing up at one of the units.

When firefighters arrived, two people on the first floor complained of not feeling well.
Fire officials said an irritant appeared to be causing the symptoms, and during the investigation, there was a possible fentanyl problem connected to the incident.
The building was evacuated, and some residents were sheltered in place.
Law enforcement, EMS, and Environmental Health were involved at the scene.
Fire crews searched around the first floor but did not find a source, and the investigation was being transferred to Fresno police and the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation into possible use and manufacture of fentanyl.
One person was treated at the scene and released.
A second person was transported to Community Regional Medical Center for further treatment.
