BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK/KBFX) — Although Team USA fell short against Turkey on Thursday, excitement among Bakersfield soccer fans remains high as the team prepares for the knockout round of the World Cup.
Fans packed Pyrenees Cafe in downtown Bakersfield to watch the match together, creating an energetic atmosphere filled with cheers and support for the U.S. Men’s National Team.
For many fans, the tournament is about more than just soccer.
“Well, the United States, such a unique melting pot of nations from everywhere, and even the U.S. Men’s National Team represents that,” said fan Elliott Magnus. “I know a lot of times, we see things that divide us, but all that was put to the side, and we all rallied around United States soccer.”
Others said watching the World Cup together has become a tradition that brings people together every four years.
“Every four years, the World Cup is pretty exciting,” said fan Andrew Brown.
Fans said the U.S. team’s strong play throughout the tournament, including its winning streak entering Thursday’s match, gave them confidence that this year’s squad could make a deep run.
“They’re doing fantastic. The best they’ve ever done,” Magnus said. “Game one, they scored four goals, the most four goals they’ve ever scored in a World Cup.”

The United States got off to a fast start Thursday, scoring the opening goal just minutes into the match. While the team was unable to hold on for the win, fans said one loss does not change their outlook.
“Every game is different, and weird things happen,” Brown said. “As long as they put their best effort, that’s all you can ask for.”
Despite Thursday’s result, Team USA has already secured a spot in the knockout round, giving fans another opportunity to rally behind the red, white and blue.
The United States’ next match is scheduled for Wednesday, July 1, as the tournament moves into its next stage.
