Reports surfaced Tuesday that the Kings are looking to waive-and-stretch DeRozan, who is on a $25.74 million expiring contract.
Since only $10 million of the deal is guaranteed, that figure can be stretched over the next three seasons.
However, Haynes noted that Sacramento will attempt to find a trade partner for the 36-year-old by early August; if no deal materializes, the team will proceed with the waive-and-stretch plan.
DeRozan’s tenure with the Kings
Following another disappointing season with the Chicago Bulls, DeRozan was traded to Sacramento in the 2024 offseason.
While the prospect of joining forces with De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis seemed like a solution for the struggling Kings, the experiment ultimately faltered.

In his first season in Sacramento, the forward averaged 22.2 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game.
Though he helped the Kings secure the tenth seed, their season ended with a play-in tournament loss to the Dallas Mavericks.
Sacramento finished DeRozan’s second season in 14th place as his averages dropped to 18.4 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game.
Sacramento Kings rebuild and Domantas Sabonis trade talks
The Kings are now seeking to revitalize their roster, with Sabonis emerging as a name in trade talks.
Sabonis, still recovering from a meniscus tear suffered last November, averaged 15.8 points, 11.4 rebounds, and 4.1 assists across just 19 appearances.
Per reports, Zach LaVine‘s contract is another piece Sacramento would like to move on from in order to free up cap space for additional moves.
Limited to 39 games by a right hand injury, the star guard averaged 19.2 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game.
One potential acquisition is NBA champion Mitchell Robinson, as reported back in May; Robinson recently helped the New York Knicks lift the NBA Finals trophy as a backup center.
