The Pac-12 was founded 111 years ago as the Pacific Coast Conference. Here’s a look at its evolution:

Dec. 2, 1915: The Pacific Coast Conference is founded during a meeting at the Imperial Hotel in Portland, Ore. The four founding members are Cal, Oregon, Oregon Agricultural College (Oregon State) and Washington. Washington State joins a year later, when conference play begins.

1922: The PCC expands to eight teams with the addition of USC and Idaho.

1924: Montana becomes the PCC’s ninth member.

1926: Membership reaches 10 schools with the addition of UCLA.

1950: Montana leaves the PCC, leaving the PCC as a nine-team conference through the ’50s.

1959: The PCC dissolves amid a “pay-to-play” scandal that results in fines and postseason bans. Cal, UCLA, USC and Washington were making under-the-table payments to athletes and providing illegal housing and jobs in order to get players.

The Athletic Association of Western Universities (AAWU) is formed, with members Cal, Stanford, UCLA, USC and Washington. Four other schools — Idaho, Oregon, Oregon State and Washington State — compete as independents before rejoining the conference.

1962-64: Washington State joins the AAWU, followed by Oregon and Oregon State two years later.

1968: Commissioner Thomas J. Hamilton rebrands the conference as the Pac-8.

1978: The conference adds Arizona and Arizona State, becoming the Pac-10.

2011: After an unprecedented 33 years with membership unchanged, Colorado and Utah join what becomes the Pac-12.

June 30, 2022: UCLA and USC announce they are leaving the Pac-12 for the Big Ten.

July 27, 2023: When a long-awaited TV deal fails to materialize, Colorado announces it is leaving for the Big 12.

Aug. 4, 2023: Oregon and Washington announce they are leaving for the Big Ten while Arizona, Arizona State and Utah head to the Big 12.

Sept. 1, 2023: Cal and Stanford announce they are joining the ACC, leaving Oregon State and Washington State as the Pac-12’s only remaining members.

Sept. 12, 2024: Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, and San Diego State announce they are leaving the Mountain West for the Pac-12. Utah State joins them 12 days later.

Oct. 1, 2024: Gonzaga joins the Pac-12, which still needs an eighth member for football since the Bulldogs do not participate in the sport.

June 30, 2025: Texas State gives the Pac-12 eight football-playing members, the minimum number required by the NCAA as an FBS conference.

Coming Wednesday: The reconstituted Pac-12 will become official. with eight teams for football — Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Oregon State, SDSU, Texas State, Utah State and Washington State. Gonzaga will make it a nine-team conference for basketball and other sports.
