SAN JOSE — A shooting Sunday night near San Pedro Square in the downtown area killed one man and critically injured another one, police said.
Officers were called to the area of Market and Santa Clara streets at 9:12 p.m. and found one man unconscious on the sidewalk, Sgt. Jorge Garibay said in a statement. Officers and medical personnel tried to save him, but he died at the scene.
Authorities did not identify him immediately, pending the investigation and notification of relatives.
Several yards away, police found the other man, Garibay said. Medical personnel worked on him and got him into an ambulance that rushed him to a hospital wtih injuries that threatened his life. Garibay said hospital doctors stabilized the man, and that he was in critical condition Monday morning and expected to live.
Police are investigating the case as a homicide, the 13th they’ve investigated this year. They did not announce any arrests or identify any suspects.
Garibay said police believe the shooting was an isolated incident.
Several streets close to the shooting were shut down for taped off in the aftermath. World Cup soccer watch parties have drawn big crowds to the area, but there were no games being aired at the time of the shooting. The only Sunday game had been over for hours after starting at noon. It was played in Los Angeles.
