Heavy downpours throughout the evening Monday created major problems for drivers in the South Bay and along the Peninsula.

In Willow Glen on Hamilton Way, significant flooding left several cars stuck. Video shows firefighters pushing a car. At one point, police had the street blocked off as it continued to rain.

On the freeways, backups due to accidents.

“So far, we’re looking at our regular first storm of the season issues, vehicles spinning out, small crashes so far,” said Sergeant Andrew Barclay of the CHP. “It is about what we would expect of the first rain of the season, we’re gonna see more of those oils, slick roadways that have built up over the summer, debris washing into the roadways.”

He also said they were seeing localized flooding in certain areas. Drivers moved slowly through flooding on northbound Highway 101 in San Jose near the Trimble exit.

“Overall looking at our logs at the moment, we’re up to about 1,900 calls for the day which is a significant increase to what a normal day would be, fair to say our officers definitely have their hands full out there,” Barclay said.

Near SJC, on the Interstate 880 onramp tunnel, cars had their blinkers on as flooding affected the area.

At one point, there was a full ground stoppage at SJC due to the weather.

At least two flights were diverted to Fresno as a result, and the majority of flights were delayed.
