BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A man who is believed to have been driving while intoxicated is in “critical but stable condition” after a crash Saturday afternoon, which also caused a power outage in the area, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.

At around 3:32 p.m. June 27, Bakersfield police officers responded after hearing a crash in the 2300 block of Ashe Road.

At the scene, officers found a gray Chevy Camaro, which had crashed into a power pole, fire hydrant and block wall, according to police.

The people in the vehicle, two men, reportedly exited and declined medical aid.

According to officials, the crash led to a power outage in the surrounding area and a water main had to be shut down due to the ruptured fire hydrant. About 1,700 people were impacted by the power outage, according to Pacific Gas and Electric Company.

Preliminary investigation shows the driver was driving south on Ashe Road when he struck the center median and lost control of the vehicle, according to BPD.

The driver was taken to a hospital for medical clearance but turned out to have suffered major injuries, according to police. He is reportedly in critical but stable condition.

Speed and intoxication are believed to be factors in the crash, officials said.
