Man arrested after deadly Motel 6 lobby shooting, Sacramento sheriff says

THE SHOOTING HAPPENED INSIDE THE LOBBY OF A MOTEL SIX ALONG ELK AVENUE. THIS HAPPENED JUST AFTER 1 A.M., AND OUR KCRA 3’S MIKE TESELLE HAS BEEN ON SCENE ALL MORNING LONG. SO MIKE, I UNDERSTAND WE ARE ACTUALLY GETTING SOME NEW INFORMATION RIGHT NOW. YEAH, THE VICTIM’S NAME HERE IN THIS MOTEL SIX SHOOTING HAS NOT YET BEEN RELEASED, BUT WE ARE LEARNING THAT THAT VICTIM WAS THE FATHER OF A YOUNG CHILD. IT’S A HEARTBREAKING SCENE OUT HERE THIS MORNING. TAKE A LOOK. AS A MOTHER AND FATHER AS WELL AS LOVED ONES, STOOD VIGIL IN FRONT OF THIS MOTEL SIX. AS YOU MENTIONED, IT WAS RIGHT AROUND 130 THIS MORNING. 21 YEAR-OLD MAN SHOT AND KILLED IN THE LOBBY OF THIS MOTEL. AND WHILE THE FAMILY DECLINED TO SPEAK TO ME ABOUT THIS KILLING A COMMUNITY ACTIVIST WHO DID SPEAK WITH THE FAMILY CONVEYED THEIR GRIEF, THEIR HEARTACHE, AND THEIR PAIN. AND I SEE JUST THE SENSELESSNESS. THE TRAGEDY OF IT ALL IS WATCHING THESE FAMILIES GRIEVE AND BE BROKEN FROM THESE MOMENTS. AND WHEN IS OUR COMMUNITY AND WHEN ARE PEOPLE GOING TO START THINKING BEFORE THEY REACT AND USE A GUN TO, YOU KNOW, HAVE THESE FATAL MOMENTS HAPPEN AND OCCUR? AND AGAIN, WE SHOULD MENTION, IF YOU HAVEN’T BEEN FOLLOWING THIS, SHERIFF’S INVESTIGATORS SAID VERY EARLY ON THAT THEY WERE REVIEWING SURVEILLANCE VIDEO FROM INSIDE THAT LOBBY TO TRY AND IDENTIFY A SUSPECT. AT THIS POINT, THE SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT IS STILL NOT OFFERING A PUBLIC UPDATE ON WHETHER THEY’VE IDENTIFIED THIS SUSPECT AND WHETHER OR NOT THERE’S ANY SUSPECT DESCRIPTION TO BE RELEASED PUBLICLY. A man is in custody in connection with a deadly motel shooting from earlier this month, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.At 1:30 a.m. on June 9, the sheriff’s office said its communications center got a call that stated someone had been shot inside the lobby of the Motel 6 at 7407 Elsie Ave. in the south Sacramento area. Deputies who went there found a 21-year-old man with a gunshot wound.The sheriff’s office said deputies tried giving the man medical aid, but fire department personnel declared the man dead at the scene.Over the course of an investigation, the sheriff’s office said it identified 22-year-old Matthew Arizaga as the suspected shooter after reviewing witness statements and video footage. Detectives learned that Arizaga fled to Las Vegas, and they took him into custody on June 15 with the help of the Las Vegas Metro Police Department.Arizaga was extradited to Sacramento on Monday night, and he is in the county jail and is ineligible for bail, the sheriff’s office said.
