Boy Killed, Father Injured in Bakersfield Crash Involving Repeat DUI Driver

Xxavian Hernandez, 8, Killed in Crash on California Avenue at Bakersfield Food Truck Lot

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (Nov. 4, 2025) — Xxavian Hernandez, 8, was killed and his father was hospitalized in a crash Monday at a food truck lot on California Avenue involving a suspected DUI driver with two prior DUI convictions.

The crash occurred on Nov. 3rd around 12:09 p.m. in the 1400 block of East California Avenue, when a black Nissan pickup traveling westbound suddenly veered off the roadway, according to the Bakersfield Police Department. The truck broke through a fence and into a parking lot where food vendors were set up, striking the father and son.

Both victims were rushed to a hospital, where Xxavian later died from his injuries early Tuesday morning. His father remains hospitalized with moderate injuries.

Police identified the driver as 33-year-old Andres Serna, who they said was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. Serna suffered minor injuries and was treated at a hospital before being taken into custody. Because of his two prior DUI convictions, police said Serna now faces murder and DUI-related charges and will be booked into the Lerdo Justice Facility after his release.

A GoFundMe page created for Xxavian describes him as “a bright, loving, and joyful little boy who brought light to every room he entered.” Funds will help cover funeral and burial expenses for the family.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Bakersfield Police Department at (661) 327-7111.
