BERKELEY – The California women’s soccer team earned its seventh shutout of the year Sunday defeating Virginia Tech 1-0 on Senior Day at Edwards Stadium. For the second time this week, junior forward Soleil Dimry came up big for the Golden Bears scoring a second-half goal.
Â
The Golden Bears (7-2-7, 3-1-3 ACC) got back in the win column to wrap up a four-point week in the ACC after drawing with No. 1 Virginia on Thursday. Cal now has 12 points which puts the team in a tie for sixth place in the conference standings. The Hokies (4-8-3, 0-6-1) failed to pick up a point on their California road trip.
Â
Prior to the match, Cal honored its six seniors with a special ceremony. Teagan Wy, Mia Fontana, Noelle Bond-Flasza, Alex Klos, Coco Thistle, and Lumi Kostmayer all earned the start in their penultimate regular-season match at Edwards Stadium.
Â
Wy was busy between the posts all afternoon but came through with a season-high eight saves including six in the second half alone. The senior couple of highlight plays and point-blank saves enroute to her 13th career shutout. Wy ranks second in the ACC with 68 saves, a 4.25 saves per game average, and seven shutouts.
Â
After a scoreless first half, Dimry, the hero from Thursday’s match, scored the game winner in the 50th minute. After winning a ball in the midfield Fontana played a ball up to junior Miriam Hils on the left touchline. Hils played a few touches until she was level with the 18-yard box and then fired a perfect left-footed cross into the box for Dimry who dove into the box and flicked a shot into the back post.
