In this week’s edition of Wellness Wednesday, Action News Now anchor Hayley Watts looks at the health benefits of blackberries and how they can potentially help lower chronic inflammation, which is linked to heart disease, diabetes and many autoimmune conditions.

CHICO, Calif. – Blackberries are showing up throughout Bidwell Park and backyards across Northern California, offering more than just a tasty treat.

The fruit is packed with health benefits that make it a true superfood.

The berries are one of the most nutrient-dense fruits available.

They’re rich in antioxidants that help neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative stress, both associated with cancer.

Blackberries may also help lower chronic inflammation, which is linked to heart disease, diabetes and many autoimmune conditions. Research suggests the anthocyanins in blackberries can even reduce age-related cognitive decline.

The fruit supports cardiovascular health by improving blood vessel function and reducing LDL, the so-called “bad” cholesterol.

One cup contains about 8 grams of fiber, helping to support immune function through the gut microbiome.

One of the strangest facts about blackberries is that they aren’t actually berries but rather an “aggregate fruit.”

Each little bubble on its surface is actually its own tiny fruit, called a drupelet, containing a seed.
