Skate Street Champions Crowned in X Games Debut Weekend

Women’s Skateboard Street: Teen Takeover

Sunday’s Women’s Skateboard Street final closed out the weekend with another teenage breakthrough. Miyu Ito captured gold, holding off defending champion and top draft pick Chloe Covell, who took silver for her ninth career X Games medal. Liz Akama claimed bronze in her first X Games appearance in two years after missing the 2025 season with an ankle injury, having now reached the podium in seven of her last eight starts in the discipline. The win gave Ito her fifth career X Games medal.

Street Best Trick: Records and Breakthroughs

The weekend’s Best Trick events added two more highlights to the Street discipline. In the Men’s Skateboard Street Best Trick final, Juni Kang won gold, while Onodera added a silver to his weekend with a switch frontside 270 noseblunt to bigspin out on the 12-stair handrail — his second podium finish of the games. Defending Street Best Trick champion Filipe Mota took bronze, giving the Brazilian three career medals in the discipline.

On the women’s side, Ito doubled up with a second gold of the weekend in Women’s Skateboard Street Best Trick, winning with a frontside bluntslide shuv-it out of the 12-stair handrail — her third career X Games gold and sixth medal in just four appearances. “I practice a lot to have a higher chance of landing my tricks. I’m really happy. Thank you, X Games,” Ito said. Paige Heyn took silver and Ibuki Matsumoto claimed bronze in that event.

A Bigger Picture for Sacramento

Skate Street was just one piece of a packed weekend that also saw record-setting performances in Vert, Park, BMX, and Moto X disciplines.

Team Tokyo left Sacramento with the early league lead at 980 points, followed by a tie for second between New York and São Paulo at 950 points, with Los Angeles in fourth at 810. The league’s next stop takes the competition to Japan this summer, with finals following shortly after in New Orleans.

For Huston, the disappointment of a near-miss on home turf didn’t dampen his enthusiasm for what Sacramento’s debut signaled for the region. “So many great skaters came out of Sacramento, me coming out of Davis… these are the type of areas that need more events like this,” Huston told CapRadio.
