The annual student design competition challenged local aspiring architects to design a “Community Hub” in Fresno’s historic Chinatown, focusing heavily on urban revitalization. The rigorous competition drew 46 total entries from standout regional architecture programs, including California State University, Fresno (Fresno State), College of the Sequoias (COS), and Fresno City College, which submitted 13 student entries.
“We are incredibly proud of our students’ outstanding performance in this competitive arena,” said Dr. Becky Barabe, Dean of the Applied Technology Division. “Sweeping the top spots speaks volumes about the talent, creativity, and technical preparation fostered within our architecture program. To design a conceptual space that honors the rich fabric of Chinatown while offering a vision for its future revitalization is a remarkable achievement, “she added.
The award-winning FCC projects and official jury accolades include:
Paige Hankins received first place and the jury highly praised Hankins’ project for subtly weaving together the complex history of Chinatown without relying on a single cultural motif. The design masterfully expressed the neighborhood’s history of division through the manipulation of physical architectural forms. Jurors noted that the concept and diagrams were beautifully connected, the floor plan was clean and highly organized, and the renderings showcased an exemplary vision of what a modern Chinatown project should be.
Alexander Cazares earned second place and her submission was commended for seamlessly fitting into the scale and fabric of the designated site. The jury appreciated the thoughtful organization of spaces, the balance of structural openings, and a highly intentional, sophisticated use of materials.
Honorable Mention was given to Liliia Skitsak caught the attention of the jury with a welcoming spatial layout that strictly adhered to the design program. The panel expressed a high level of appreciation for the technical skill displayed in her exploded axonometric drawing and the presentation rendering.
