LOS ANGELES — The strength of a struggling team is taking a hit.

Right-hander Jason Adam was placed on the 15-day injured list with shoulder inflammation ahead of Thursday’s 7:10 p.m. start at Dodger Stadium. To replace him in the bullpen, the Padres — losers of five in a row — have activated right-hander Germán Marquez from the injured list.

Adam has a 2.51 ERA in 32⅓ innings. He leads the team with 17 holds, but he had a 5.11 ERA and gave up four homers in 14 appearances in June after going 12 innings in May without yielding a run.

The 34-year-old Adam, a first-time All-Star last year, opened the season on the injured list as the Padres gave him ample time to build up following last year’s season-ending surgery to repair a ruptured quad tendon.

The Padres had been preparing Márquez for a relief role before news of Adam’s injury as he allowed a run in 1 ⅔ innings out of the bullpen for Triple-A El Paso on June 23 and three runs in two-thirds of an inning on June 30.

All told, Márquez had a 3.57 ERA across 17 ⅔ innings on his rehab assignment with El Paso. He struck out 13, walked eight and allowed opponents a .246 batting average.

Márquez had a 5.76 ERA in 29 ⅔ innings to begin the year in the Padres’ rotation. He landed on the injured list on May 3 with inflammation in his forearm nerve.

Thursday’s pitching matchup

Padres RHP Randy Vásquez (6-6, 4.44 ERA)

He pitched behind an opener last weekend against the Dodgers, allowing seven runs—four earned—on eight hits and a walk in 3⅓ innings. Vásquez has a 7.34 ERA over his last seven appearances, walking 13 against 15 strikeouts over 30⅔ innings. He has allowed nine homers over that stretch.

Dodgers RHP Roki Sasaki (3-5, 4.88 ERA)

The second-year starter took the loss in the Dodgers’ only loss last weekend at Petco Park. He tied a season high with five walks and allowed three runs in four innings in his first career appearance against the Padres. Sasaki has an 8.36 ERA over his last three starts.
