Fresno has selected a new airport director after former director Henry Thompson passed away last year.
The city announced that it has appointed Mark Thorpe to lead Fresno Yosemite International Airport.
Driving the news: Thorpe comes to Fresno with nearly three decades of commercial aviation experience.
He has held top positions at Los Angeles International Airport, Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Ontario International Airport.
Thorpe also founded an aviation consulting firm that advised airlines, airports and the U.S. Department of Transportation.
He has a law degree and MPA from George Washington University to go along with a bachelor’s degree from Arizona State.
Zoom in: During his time at Ontario International Airport, Thorpe helped double the number of airline partners and led the work to expand international service and establish regional hub facilities for FedEx and Amazon Prime.
In Los Angeles, Thorpe worked to add 13 new airlines and boosted service to 32 new destinations.
During his time in Dallas, Thorpe expanded passenger and cargo connectivity to Asia, Latin America and North America.
What we’re watching: Thorpe’s first day on the job will be July 9.
What they’re saying: “Mark’s experience leading complex airport operations, expanding air service and building strong industry partnerships distinguished him throughout this process,” said City Manager Georgeanne White. “As Fresno Yosemite International Airport continues to grow and evolve, I am confident he is the right leader to guide the airport into its next chapter.”
Mayor Jerry Dyer lauded Thorpe for his vast experience and said he has the ability to help push Fresno Yosemite International Airport through its continued expansion.
“Fresno Yosemite International Airport is one of the fastest-growing airports in California and has become a powerful economic driver for our region,” Dyer said. “As we continue expanding air service and advancing plans for our future international terminal, Mark has the experience, relationships and vision to build on that momentum.”
Thorpe said he is excited to lead the airport into what he believes will be a very bright future.
“With the new international terminal and continued strong population and economic growth in Fresno and the Central Valley, there is a tremendous opportunity for Fresno Yosemite International Airport to continue expanding connectivity throughout the United States, Mexico, Canada and Central America,” Thorpe said.
