SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A San Diego neighborhood was temporarily under a shelter-in-place order Thursday due to a gas leak.
Shortly before 11 a.m., the San Diego Police Department informed residents in the 1200 block of Essex Street, from Vermont to Richmond Streets, to shelter in place due to a severed gas line. The impacted area was located in the Hillcrest community.
Residents were told to stay inside their homes and close all doors and windows. Authorities also advised locals to avoid anything that could create a spark or open flame until the gas leak was cleared.
Additionally, drivers were asked to avoid the area in Hillcrest as police and emergency crews worked to fix the gas leak.
In an update around noon, SDPD announced the shelter-in-place order had been lifted.

“The situation involving the severed gas line near the 1200 block of Essex Street is now under control,” the department announced in a statement. “Thank you to our partners with San Diego Fire-Rescue and SDG&E for their quick response and assistance in safely resolving the incident.”
The cause of the gas leak was not immediately released.
