Authorities in Los Angeles County will intensity enforcement against illegal street takeovers as deputies are ready to ticket those who participate in the events during the Fourth of July weekend, the LA County Sheriff’s Department said Friday.
Anyone who participates in street takeovers, including organizers, promoters and drivers, are subjected to a $1,000 fine.
Despite recent increase in penalty, street takeovers continue to take place, often accompanied by other violent events. Last Sunday, one man died while six others became injured in a shooting that occurred near a street takeover in Carson, the sheriff’s department said. Another incident in South Los Angeles resulted in multiple vehicles being destroyed, including a stolen vehicle that caught fire, according to authorities.
“No one should have to fear for their safety or risk losing their life because of these reckless and entirely preventable events,” Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly Mitchell said in a statement.
“As we head into the holiday weekend and the busy summer season, our message is clear: if you choose to participate in, organize or promote an illegal street takeover you will be held accountable,” she added.
Sheriff Robert Luna said deputies will increase enforcement over the holiday weekend.
“Street takeovers are not a victimless crime, they are dangerous, illegal, and will not be tolerated in our communities,” Luna said. “Our deputies will continue to take decisive enforcement action against those who participate in or facilitate these reckless events.”
According to the county, street takeovers in unincorporated areas and contract cities declined 33% between 2024 and 2025 and 53% between 2024 and 2026, based on data from the first three months of each year.
Officials urged anyone who sees or has information about an illegal street takeover to contact their local law enforcement agency.
