HARRISON COUNTY, Miss. (WLOX) — A 38-year-old man is facing a murder charge after a shooting death on Allen Road early Thursday morning, and police made an arrest roughly 21 hours after the initial call.
Long Beach police arrested Hallis Wayne Russ Jr. early Friday at a residence in George County along Pat Eubanks Road.
Assisting in the investigation were the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, George County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson County Emergency Services Unit and Mississippi Department of Homeland Security.
Officers responded to a shooting call at approximately 4:40 a.m. Thursday at a home on Allen Road in Long Beach. There, they found 38-year-old Neville Conner, who had died from multiple gunshot wounds.
Long Beach Police Chief Billy Seal said Russ and Conner were acquaintances. Why the two were at the Allen Road home early Thursday morning and what led to the shooting remain under investigation.
Russ was arrested at least one other time for a violent crime. In 2017, Russ was charged with stabbing a man in front of the Hard Rock Casino in Biloxi. He pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and served nine and a half months in prison.
Chief Seal said residents should not be concerned.
“We think this was an isolated incident. We made the arrest and I don’t think there’s any concern for the public at all,” Seal said.
Investigators have not yet located the murder weapon; the investigation is ongoing.
Russ is charged with one count of murder and is being held at the Harrison County Adult Detention Center on a $1 million bond.
