BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Friends and family of a man who was killed in an alleged DUI crash June 28 held a vigil near the crash site Thursday night.
“He was probably so scared. To look and see that he couldn’t prevent it that he couldn’t stop in time,” Greg Fraley’s stepdaughter, Devin Brown, said.
Tears fell to the parking lot blacktop as she thought of what her stepfather’s last moments were like.
Sunday night, just after midnight, 63-year-old Greg Fraley was headed west on Chester Lane when a silver Mazda hatchback ran a red light and smashed into Fraley’s BMW sedan.
Fraley was rushed to Kern Medical, however, he was pronounced dead at 1:30 a.m.
A father, grandfather and friend to many was mourned at a vigil in his honor, held at the very intersection where he was struck.
Brown remembered a summer day when she was young, when Fraley taught her how to color, “He bought me a coloring book, and he taught me how to shade, how to color correctly and I took that throughout my life. I still use the same techniques he taught me.”
Other friends and family said Fraley was the kindest, helpful and loving guy you could meet.
“He always had my back and I always had his. We could always rely on each other,” said Rhonda Brown-Tutor, Fraley’s sister-in-law.
On one poster, family and friends wrote a message to Fraley.
“It’s just a tragic waste that he left us like this,” said Donna Wruck, a friend of Fraley’s.
The driver that struck Fraley has been identified as 23-year-old Gavin Mundschau.
He was charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI causing injury. His blood alcohol content was 0.089% at the time of the crash.
He pleaded not guilty and has been released from custody as of Wednesday.
Family at Fraley’s vigil is calling for the maximum sentence and wants Fraley’s story to show other people to not get behind the wheel if they’ve been drinking.
“We all know the dangers of driving and drinking, one decision changed countless lives forever.”
