Flyers general manager Daniel Briere announced that the organization has tendered an offer sheet to Leo Carlsson, attempting to pry one of the NHL’s brightest young centers away from the Anaheim Ducks.
The offer is a five-year contract carrying an average annual value of $18 million. If Anaheim declines to match the deal, the Flyers would be required to send their first-round pick in each of the next four NHL Drafts as compensation.
Under the NHL’s collective bargaining agreement, the Ducks have seven days to decide whether they will match the offer and keep Carlsson in Anaheim or allow him to join Philadelphia and accept the significant draft-pick package in return.
It’s an aggressive move from a Flyers organization that has repeatedly preached patience throughout its rebuild. Carlsson is much more than just an exciting young talent.
The 21-year-old center is coming off a breakout season in which he recorded 29 goals and 38 assists for 67 points in 70 regular-season games. He also elevated his game in the postseason, producing 11 points in 12 playoff games while helping Anaheim reach the second round.
Since being selected second overall in the 2023 NHL Draft, Carlsson has quickly become one of the league’s most exciting young centers. Through 201 career NHL games, the Karlstad, Sweden native has accumulated 61 goals and 80 assists for 141 points.
At 6-foot-3 and 208 pounds, Carlsson possesses the size, skill, and two-way ability teams spend years trying to find down the middle.
Philadelphia is signaling that it believes Carlsson is worth both the financial commitment and the steep draft-pick compensation required to acquire him.
Whether the gamble pays off now rests in Anaheim’s hands.
