Have you ever missed an appointment because you didn’t have a ride? Or wanted to attend an event but preferred not to drive? Confident use of a rideshare service might be the answer. Sign up for the free Uber class being offered by Senior Tech Connect and Solana Beach Community Connections (SBCC) and learn how to use the Uber app with confidence, a news release states.

The two-part class will be held on Monday, July 20, and Wednesday, July 22, at 11 a.m. The class is designed to help older adults ride with Uber confidently and independently. Each session is about an hour, and attendees are encouraged to come to both sessions. The class is being held in the large community room at La Colonia Community Center. The center is located at 715 Valley Avenue in Solana Beach.

The first session covers the setup essentials, including how to create an Uber account, add a payment method, and turn on the app’s new Simple Mode, a streamlined view designed to make the app easier to navigate.

The second session builds on that foundation with a walkthrough of requesting a ride, choosing the right ride option, exploring extra services like scheduled rides and deliveries, using safe features such as Share My Trip and trusted contacts, and rating your driver, the news release states.

No prior experience with Uber is needed, and by the end of the series, attendees will have established an active, personal account along with the skills to use it on their own. Attendees can also receive a coupon code for 50% off their next ride, according to the news release.

The class is being taught Dylan Willis, the San Diego Market president for Senior Tech Connect and a Marine Corps veteran with over 10 years’ experience in cybersecurity and network administration. In the past year, Willis has taught over 2,000 seniors how to use their smart devices more effectively and how to avoid cyber scams by better protecting their sensitive information.

Registration is free and no sign-ups are necessary. Be sure to bring your mobile phone or tablet. If you are a Solana Beach senior needing transportation, call Jewish Family Service (JFS) at 858-923-1344 to schedule a ride at least five days in advance. Please note, JFS transportation is only available on Wednesday, July 22 from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.
