Dr. Richard Pan, former state senator, announces his candidacy for California’s 6th Congressional District.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Former State Sen. Dr. Richard Pan announced he’s running for California‘s redrawn 6th Congressional District after voters approved Proposition 50.
Pan, a Democrat and physician, shifted his focus to District 6 after previously planning to run in the 3rd Congressional District to challenge Republican Kevin Kiley.
Pan served on the State Assembly from 2010 to 2014 and was later elected to the State Senate from 2014 to 2022. In 2023, he entered the race for Sacramento Mayor, but dropped out after the March 2024 primary.
“From expanding health care coverage to over 65,000 kids in the Sacramento region, to years serving our community in the State Legislature where I cut the uninsured rate in California by almost two thirds, I have always put the health and safety of our children and families first,”Pan said in a press release. “As the Trump Administration takes food off the table for one out of eight Americans and makes health care unaffordable for tens of thousands of people in this district, I’m running for Congress to stop the extremist policies hurting Californians and to solve the problems our everyday families face.”
California’s 6th Congressional District currently includes most of Sacramento County, covering parts of Sacramento, Rancho Cordova, Citrus Heights, Rio Linda, Elverta, Arden-Arcade, Antelope, Foothill Farms, North Highlands, and most of Fair Oaks.
Under the new boundaries approved under Proposition 50, the district will encompass north Sacramento, Natomas, East Sacramento, West Sacramento, North Highlands, Citrus Heights, Antelope, Orangevale, Roseville, and Rocklin.
The seat is currently held by Democratic Rep. Ami Bera, who announced Tuesday night that he will challenge Kiley in the redrawn 3rd District.
