LONG BEACH, Miss. (WLOX) — Two oak trees believed to be more than 200 years old were celebrated Tuesday as live oak specialist Larry Tucei demonstrated how to measure them for local leaders and residents.
The trees, named E.O. Hunt and Sara Hunt, could be over 200 years old. E.O. Hunt stands 50 feet tall and is considered one of the largest multi-trunk live oaks in the United States.
“So over the years, through the research and studies and documentation I’ve done, have not found one larger than this,” Tucei said. “This is a multi-trunk tree. In other words, two trees that grew together over a 200-year period. And it’s the greatest of its kind in the state and maybe in the southern United States. It dwarfs you when you walk over there. You don’t really see how big this tree is until you go stand by it. This is a living being. God created these trees.”
Tucei said he will soon take samples from the trees to determine volume measurements and learn their carbon footprint.
