The rumors that have been swirling since early June are true – a major resource for San Francisco pet owners is set to go dark soon. PetSmart’s San Francisco store, located at 2675 Geary Blvd. in the City Center shopping plaza, will close on Sunday, July 19.
The pet superstore confirmed the closure in an email to SFGATE. “We remain committed to serving pet parents throughout San Francisco, who will continue to have access to nearby PetSmart locations, including our Daly City store, as well as online shopping with convenient delivery options,” wrote PetSmart. “We are also expanding fulfillment capabilities at our Daly City location to help meet the needs of the community.”
PetSmart said “a number of factors” prompted the closure. “As more customers choose online ordering, autoship and same-day delivery, we’re continuing to adapt how we serve pet parents across the Bay Area,” the company said in an email.
For countless locals, PetSmart is more than just a retailer. The sprawling San Francisco store offered an abundance of services, including dog and cat boarding, doggie day camp and grooming. All of those amenities are currently listed as temporarily closed on the site – training and adoptions are being offered in the meantime.

Despite the news not being publicly announced, customers utilizing the daycare services have been aware for some time. “I am very bummed that you are closing your San Francisco location and gave your customers less than a week’s notice to find alternative care,” one Instagram user wrote on June 4. “I am grateful for the staff because they are truly wonderful people who love the dogs that come to this location. I will find a back up plan but am worried abt your staff and how they will be supported in this transition time.”

According to PetSmart, employees are being offered transition resources and “information about opportunities at nearby PetSmart locations.”
Founded in 1986, the privately owned company is headquartered in Phoenix and employs around 50,000 people, according to Forbes. In 2015, BC Partners, a private equity firm, acquired PetSmart for $8.7 billion.
With the impending closure, the nearest pet supply stores that locals can turn to are Pet’s Corner, down the road at 3701 Geary Blvd., and Rowdy and Archie Pet Shop at 3001 Sacramento St.
